1st Chapel Scout Group is 103 years old this year and is still thriving. We currently have 2 successful Cub Packs, a flourishing Beaver Colony and an active Scout Troop.

However, the group’s success is only made possible by a team of dedicated leaders and a supportive committee, all of who are volunteers.

At Chapel, we are also lucky enough to have a brilliant headquarters, which is the envy of many groups and is considered to be one of the best in the district, if not
the county. However, the headquarters is now 30 years and is overdue for some repairs and modernisation, especially with regards to the toilet and kitchen facilities.

The group committee has started to make plans for what is to be the largest project undertaken by the group since the construction of the HQ. The project is to include a major overhaul of the toilet, kitchen and storage facilities to meet the ongoing needs of the group.

How you can help

There are many ways that you can be of assistance to the Scout Group. Whether it is volunteering as a leader/helper, offering practical skills/services or joining the group executive committee, your help is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

At the moment, we are particularly looking for volunteers to help on the Group’s fundraising sub-committee. This is a small, but active committee who meet 4-6 times a year to plan fundraising activities for the group. The meetings are held on an informal basis (at the Roebuck) and fundraising activities are supported by theleaders and the committee.

Whilst we will obviously need fundraising for the HQ project, there is also an ongoing need for funds to buy equipment for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. If you are interested in helping your child get the most out of Scouting and are interested in making a difference, then the fundraising committee could be the thing for you. Whether you have fundraising ideas, contacts, or just a willingness to help, we would love hear from you.

The next meeting of the fundraising committee is at 8pm on the 20th February. Please speak to one of your child’s leaders for further details.

Group Back Pack 19th November 2011

Well here it is: Bag Pack Time again! As many of you know it is one of the most important fund raising events of our year. Each year the Group has to raise several Thousands of Pounds to help pay for the running costs of the Scout Hut.

Money raised in addition to the minimum required is then spent on Goodies and has allowed us to buy the trailer and new tents. This year the focus will be on improving the kitchen & toilet facilities in the Scout HQ.

Last year the bag pack raised £1126 which we think is a pretty good return for an hour of your Childs time!

In order to try and maximise the amount of money raised this year we have found the following method works! This will keep our “staffing” consistent all day.

The Bag pack will last for 8 hours and each section has been randomly selected a 2 hour slot – your child should do one of those!

Your Child attends a 1 hour slot within his sections allocated time

If you can’t do your allocated slot, but you can do another time, we co-ordinate swaps

If you can’t make the day at all / have other commitments, just let us know – we would be very grateful to receive a donation instead!

We are arranging for a Uniformed Member to be present for each of the 8 hours but would also like as many parents as possible to stay for the hour with your Child.

Our Target this year is to beat last year’s again! – Let’s see what we can do!

Remembrance Day Parade

As many of you will recall in the last two years there has been division in Chapel-en-le-Frith over the timing of the wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial on the Market Place. Chapel Scouts were very strongly of the opinion that that ceremony should be at 11am on Remembrance Sunday morning to coincide with the National Wreath Laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

The good news is that agreement has finally been reached and that everybody in Chapel will now be able to attend at the War Memorial at 11am to pay their respects As a consequence of this agreement this year 1st Chapel-en-le-Frith Scouts will once again participate fully in the parade, the church service and the wreath laying ceremony. All Scouts, Cubs and Beavers are expected to take part. Everyone should attend in full uniform and be wearing a poppy.

Poppies will be on sale at the H.Q. during the week prior to SUNDAY 13TH NOVEMBER 2011.

Children should be at our H.Q. by 9-15am. Our car park will be the assembly point for the whole parade. In order to avoid the risk of any accident please do not drive your cars onto our car park but allow your children to alight on the public car park on Thornbrook Road and walk to the H.Q. on foot. The side gate by the Doctors’ Surgery will be opened to allow safe access to our land.

The march to the church will commence at 9-30am. Children can be collected from the H.Q. after the parade at 11.30 am.

Re-dedication of the War Memorial

On Friday 11th November the newly restored war Memorial is to be re-dedicated by the Bishop of Derby. Scouts have been invited to attend at that ceremony. I understand selected children from the local schools will also be allowed to attend. We would like to be able to select two or three children from each of our sections to attend in uniform as part of that ceremony.

If you would be willing to allow your child to represent 1st chapel-en-le- Frith Scouts at this important ceremony please let your child’s section leader know a.s.a.p.

Tony Read -Group Scout Leader-1st Chapel-en-le- Frith Scouts.

After a 20 year break, the Scout Association is planning to reintroduce ‘bob-a-job’ week in a bid to encourage young people to get involved and help out in their local communities.

Bob-a-job week, where boy scouts lend a helping hand to friends and neighbours in exchange for a small payment, ended in 1992 after concerns were raised over health and safety and child protection issues.

The scheme had previously seen youngsters across the UK carry out jobs including car washing, gardening and helping elderly people with their shopping.

After nearly two decades, bob-a-job week – or Scout Job Week as it is officially known – is back, but modern scouts won’t expect to receive a penny for their hard work.

The new scheme, called Scout Community Week, focuses on volunteering and is designed to encourage entrepreneurial skills and helpfulness among young people.

From window cleaning to shoe shining and household chores to outdoor activities, thousands of scouts will lend a hand in their local areas when the scheme launches next year. The revamped bob-a-job week will run between May 14 and May 20, 2012.

Based on the weather outlook for the weekend we have decided to move the location of the bivouac camp to Gradbach Scout Campsite, near flash. The reasons for this are that Gradbach can offer more in the way of shelter; has a drying room for wet gear and has hot showering facilities.

Due to the change in venue, we would request that Cubs are dropped at the main farm yard at Gradbach Scout Camp at 2pm on the Saturday and be collected at the same place at 3.pm on the Sunday.

We do appreciate that changing the venue at short notice may cause transport problems and therefore, if this is likely to cause you an issue, please do not hesitate to contact one of the leaders and we will do what we can to arrange transport for you (Bagheera Tel: 07929 264 148).

In terms of kit we strongly recommend waterproof trousers and coats and also Wellington boots. In addition, please pack warm clothes. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL ITEMS OF KIT (INC BOOTS) ARE CLEARLY LABELLED. As a pack we cannot be responsible for any lost kit, but will keep a lost and found box for 2 weeks after the camp.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact one of the leaders.

Baden-Powell based Cub Scouting on a collection of stories from Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’. To this day the Cub section takes much of its inspiration from the stories and many of ceremonies and moral lessons featured in the book still form a key part in the way the ‘pack’ is run.

The opening and closing ceremonies still feature a ‘Grand Howl’ where the Cubs make a promise to Akela (the leader of the wolf pack) that they will do their best. Also, all the leaders are named after characters from the book.

It is good for all Cubs to understand the link between the Jungle Book and Cub Scouting therefore, to help our pack gain a further understanding, We are planning a trip to Buxton Opera House to watch the Jungle Book on Thursday 9th June 2011.

Tickets cost £8.00 each

If your Cub would like to attend on the night, we need confirmation and full payment NO LATER than 2nd June 2011.
